Why has Aphex twin sucked for the last 4 years?

topic posted Thu, October 21, 2004 - 1:52 PM by  Robert
Im just curious, does anyone else feel like he does?
I enjoyed Druqks and all, but it didnt even seem like a new release. It sounded more like a compilation of previously unreleased tracks. His song on Rephlexions was very boring, and Smojphace sounds like a bad Venetian Snares parody.

Anyone know whats going on?

Has RDJ gotten himself addicted to Heroin?

I am just very surprised that a man with so much talent has decided to stop producing extremely creative music..

thanks

he's decided to stop producing music entirely. Druqks had some inventive stuff, with a "prepared" midi piano a la john cage. i think he just released a bunch of stuff he was working on up till he decided to retire. it has enough good tracks for a single great CD, people just can't hold attention across two disks.

the last release was "mixes for cash", and i think that says a lot about the amount of interest he's had in making electronic music lately. i expect he'll keep producing and work on his own label, and maybe release an occasional track under a phony name just to keep us guessing.

I thought it was a great disc, i was just shocked this has been his only "new" output in 4-5 years. Only because it doesnt sound like new output, it sounds like outtakes and unreleased tracks that didnt make the cut of RDJ album or I care because you do.
Don't get me wrong though, i love most of the stuff the man does.

" i expect he'll keep producing and work on his own label, and maybe release an occasional track under a phony name just to keep us guessing."

His own label is a big dissapointment coming from a man of such Genius, it seems like his new artists are all following the footsteps of Tigerbeat6. Amen andrews on Rephlex i liked, but everything else on Rephlex sounds very crass to me. Cylob has put out some great albums too.

Have you heard Richard D james newest songs?
The only 2 i know of that he has put out since Druqks is "smojphace" and an untitled track off the new Rephlex sampler "rephlexions"

they dont even sound like him, more like Venetian snares or Kid 606.

I just think the man stopped caring about making amazing music. If he makes music now, it isnt much more than masturbatory amen break hackery.

Everyone can get a little sick of doing the same thing, no matter what it is really, for a number of years. The man has been producing incredible music since he was around 12 or 13......I don't know, I think everyone is entitled to a break every once in a while. And "drukqs" was all completely original and new tracks, which personally I regard as one of his best albums. There's trickery on that album that is not found anywhere else......

The remix album, I'll admit, is not the best......but if you've ever read an interview where he speaks about remixing people's tracks, I think it totally makes sense. I'm pretty down with most of it......

I do know for sure though that at some point there will be new material, because when a promoter friend of mine here in Seattle put in a bid for him, the reply was, "Not until any new material comes out."

        peace

I think the fact that Squarepusher has basically usurped his thrown has something to do with it.

RDJ is to electronic music what David Foster Wallace is to literature, or rather, has become.

I feel like squarepusher is getting bad now too. His album "Go plastic" was amazing. Then everything thats come out since sounds like a rehash.

I think its more like Autechre whos thrown AFX out of his thrown.

they seem to be the only ones left still heavily innovating.

              Robert,
I don't know where you get off saying those things, the fact is all three (well, four) of them are the preeminent musical geniuses of our time. Each one, in his own way, has managed to throw out "the rules" of music more than just a couple of times. We might have our own preferences as to which direction we might like them to take their art, but to say something like "squarepusher is getting bad" is moronic. if I had it in me to make just one track of such quality I'd fucking retire. I'm always happy whenever any of these guys gets around to putting something out, and I would never, ever slag them.

look deeper. maby some people have trouble keeping up with his taste and/or skill level. the programming on taking control( esp. the toms) is some shit that i am sure anyone else including yourself would have great trouble aproching the level of copmlexity the he displays. just some thoughts.
    peace.
  • Well lemme say this, I think that you are right in that Drukqs isn't that great, I think that after I care because you do, he set a bar that was hard to reach again, it's hard to reach that level when he is always changing and morphing. Trying new styles is risky, I don't really think he did to great on the Analord stuff either! I think your right though, I don't know, the new stuff just doesn't have the Amazing melodies and great beats.
    • i've been reading this thread for the last few days & have put in a bit of thought on the topic. why has afx sucked recently? because our ears have evolved. what used to blow me away in the 80's or 90's just doesn't quite do it for me anymore. i still love the donkey rhubarb video & druqs had some good spots. i love mixing the vinyl into dj sets still. i used afx2 in a set just today. the analord series is darker than some of the other stuff, but you can't compare it to venetian snares or squarepusher w/out realizing that they're biting RDJ's style. my point is that many other artists (daft punk, plastikman, kid 606, lamb, etc) have caught on to the squeex & throbs that only RDJ was making years back. it's hard to stay ahead of the pack & original w/ so much music coming out each & every week, month, year...

one other thing: how many of you haters are DJ's who play AFX tracks in your sets? sitting around smoking & listening to cd's is one thing. mixing tracks into a coherent set is a different animal indeed. check out the AFX v luke vibert set & you'll see my point (don't call me satan!)

Aphex twin has not sucked at any point. You gotta cut back or stop sometime. Druqks was an awesome album and I dont understand why people want straight up albums instead of compilations... its still stuff weve never heard. IDK, im still working on obtaining every single song made by him. LEGALY! since this is someone who I actually want to support and his work is definatly worth paying for... If i never started listening to RDJ I would still be producing crappy house music.... I learned to put thought into mapping out songs from this guy.

THANKS FOR MAKING ME A BITER RDJ!!!
